THINK about alternative forms of “medicine” for your life. BE INFORMED, don’t just read a little and jump! Nature is highly evolved and can also be VERY TRICKY. BUT, guess what? Your doctor will not profit from you doing this so you will be discouraged (unless they are highly evolved as well…there are still some good doctors out there).
Even the food we eat is, and can be “medicine” when used in the right context. Take Chicken Soup for example. The reason that this American staple for helping to cure colds and cold-like symptoms has been around for so long is HOW it was first made and with what key ingredients. In 1993 Dr. Stephen Rennard at the University of Nebraska Medical Center set out to determine what it is that makes Chicken Soup so helpful when consuming it during a cold. Dr. Rennard used both homemade and canned, and found that the soup stops the movement of inflammation-causing, white blood cells called neutrophils. Likewise, a 1978 study by K. Saketkhoo et al, “Effects of drinking hot water, cold water, and chicken soup on nasal mucus velocity and nasal airflow resistance,” found that drinking hot chicken soup effectively loosens nasal mucous secretions, which helps you rid them from your body faster, easing cold symptoms and congestion. This is a perfect example of a food that is used for medicinal purposes. There is an adage that I subscribe to when fighting a cold in addition to the Chicken Soup treatment. This incorporates the 1978 study of consuming liquids mentioned above. And that’s to drink at least 10oz of water or other light colored liquid EVERY HOUR. And for good measure to get well even faster, take at least 500 mg of Vitamin C at least every 4 hours. Better yet, drink a packet of Emergen-C in the middle of the day. It contains Zinc which will boost your immune system as well as other vitamins & minerals that are effective in fighting off disease. Vitamin C is water soluble and therefore is NOT STORED in the body. It must be replenished daily. A 6 oz glass of GOOD orange juice daily is all that is needed, if you are well and not fighting off a virus/disease. This is one of my favorite vitamins to take each day. One important note here: KNOW YOUR BODY!!! If you already know that you are sensitive to Vitamin C as it causes rashes, or other harsh side-effects, you will need to opt for a lower dose OR an alternative altogether. Sometimes its just a matter of trying a different product as some people can be allergic to some of the caking substances, one being Aspartic Acid. That’s why a good ‘ol class of O.J. in the morning still makes for the best option.
I’ve talked about Chicken Soup and likewise have touched upon the healing benefits of Vitamin C. These are just TWO FOODS that we consume on a somewhat traditionally, regular basis (or should) that can benefit our life styles and keep us from relying on conventional medicine. There are many approaches, including the simple addition of a good quality, multi-vitamin. This is recommended to the average person because of our inconsistent eating habits in our busy life styles today. Its worth looking into. In this process you can also learn a lot about your own body’s capabilities and what you can do, change wise; in your life style to help live a happier, healthier life. Its never too late.
(Please note: I am in no way a doctor nor do I have a certificate in any nutritional or dietary education. This is purely through the process of growing up obese in a family that knew little about nutrition that I tapped into the wealth of alternative medicine knowledge that is available and is constantly being updated. I found I could live a healthier life when I started doing this in my late teens and have continued to benefit from changes I’ve made in my life as a result. If my experiences can help someone else, then I am happy to share.)
Peace, Love & Good Health

In these uncertain times, its more important than ever to practice the mind set that less IS more. All the things we throw away. The donations made to the Salvation Army. Not to mention the impulse purchases that are nothing more than our misplaced boredom. “WHY did I buy this?” Then we discard a lot of these things along with other possessions that we truly can live without. Only to go out and buy more stuff to fill that space! Its a crazy cycle.

Here we are upon another 3-day week-end “holiday.” Most people look forward to these so they can get out of town, maybe go camping with the family. Have a HUGE BBQ with their friends. What’s sad is that even in such a huge Military town, there are so many just meandering about now even realizing that this is a moment for pause. A moment to talk with our children about family/friends/fellow service members that we may know that have paid the ultimate price for our continued freedoms. Not even a single 3-year old should be left clueless about what this day means to our country and why we “celebrate” the fallen.
